Facebook has always felt ‘whole’ compared to other social networking apps.
The new facebook a definitely a step in the right direction in visual organization.

    Better Feed

By adding filter categories your able to see more of what you want.

Learnhub would benefit from this concept their activity feed

    What’s with the rounder corners?

The corners with the strong solid border feel out of place.
It causes visual confusion, I haven’t figured out the technical reasons why but I know it needs to go.
The headings are weak. They just don’t work with that grey background they’re sitting on.
Those headings remind of me a old version of basecamp.

This is what I would say would fix it. I didn’t mock it in but I’d make the font larger.

There are many web-apps that are guilty of using small font sizes. eg. facebook, learnhub
Its to the point that its just one font size too small. I try to stick around 14px and rarely go under 12px.
Also if your going to go small fonts, choose a font that actually is more readable small such as Georgia.

    Forget the Ajax Forms

Its not really worth adding that ajax to make it more convenient not to leave your home page.
Facebook’s worst problem is its javascript glitches. Also as soon as you mess something up your brought to the static form page for validation.
Why not just start there? It’ll be better for the user to focus on their action.

The Status update makes sense to be ajax, but cramming that message form in their hurt my brain.
    Look at that message box.

    Home Page

Too bad they can’t get rid of that third column, but they need it for ads.
I’m sure if they’d didn’t have ads we’d be seeing a two column design.
Three columns are horrible inefficient, they’re too easy to be used wrong, so its better to just stay clear.
The white space that third column leads for ads really offsets what your looking at.

    Tabs are good!

    Visual Road Blocks Gone

Even though its now cleaner I was concerned that breaking the information up into tabs would leave less information visible for users to scan, causing missed information to result people finding connections.
But really, they’ve just purified the home page by discarding the mess of applications and leaving only what needed.

The old facebook homepage was data heavy, lot of information, but just too much that it became cluttered.

Learnhub’s homepage has the same feeling.
I think purifying it like facebook is doing would be very beneficial

    Slim Navigation

Much cleaner. I think the search field could be bigger.

I wish learnhub had a new slim navigation.

I don’t have many negatives about the new facebook.
There’s a-lot more I could talk about it. I was just engulfing every design elements last week.

I really wish they’d fix those funky javascript glitches though.

I didn’t enjoy the new Facebook design at first. When you become accustom to a design for so long, it’s often jarring to have it suddenly change. I even heard people on the streets saying they didn’t like the new design. Though, as I use it, it’s definitely not half bad. It’s a little bleak though, no real color. There is a LOT of white now, but generally I like it. A lot of new additions, little ones, that can really make things enjoyable. Like the fact you can comment on peoples status now is a load of fun. They have a lot of great functions and I really enjoy the news feeds now like Andrew said.

Personally I like our (LearnHubs) front page the way it is. I see the front page being headlines, like a newspaper, sharing top stories, featured items, and such; while the communities and workspace being focused on the social network more like Facebook with an active news feed, lots of social activity, and content.

So I do agree with you Andrew, maybe just not on the front page.

Overall, the new Facebook is a good update!

I agree with Andrew and Lechuck, I really do like the new news feed. It’s a lot easier to find new updates and makes it more of a social function within you and your circle of friends to keep each other updated. I am blown away by the ability to comment on people’s statuses. It’s so instant, fun and entertaining! I didn’t convert to the new Facebook til yesterday night and people had commented on my status that I didn’t even know were there! There is a lot of white space, especially on the sides, I’m not sure if that was just my computer or the actual design. Everything sort of looks squished to the middle. Hmm.
